As an American I am extremely grateful to the men and women who trained at the Palacios Army Airfield and as a pilot I am very thankful for the airstrips they left behind. The longevity of the runways is a testament to the quality work produced during the war years, and a reminder of the effort given by all who served.

Visiting Palacios was like taking a trip back in time, a trip well worth the hour flight from my home airport near Houston. Before visiting Palacios I never knew my little rental plane could be such an effective time machine.

The sun was getting low in the sky and I had to head back to Houston before it got dark. I hopped into my time machine and headed northeast. I am not by any means a frequent flyer — but living in Houston for 10 years of my childhood and then when I was earning my private license in Colorado in -La Junta was one of my legs of cross country. I believe La Junta was also an old army field. Coming in to land you can truly feel a sense of going back in time.

The field is still used for training purposes. I was granted permission to walk the runways though.

Another of my nearby favorites is Rockport, a little farther down the coast which has the same atmosphere as Palacios, with a nice, comfortable terminal building. But the best one has to be Goliad with its two, enormous, totally abandoned runways, and if you get there on the right weekend you can catch the amateur drag races.

As a Canadian I cherish the freedom flight brings.
